“Willa Cather et le phonographe : amour ou haine ?” a text by Florent Dubois (Université de Picardie Jules Verne) for the section Frontières sonores du littéraire of the Larca’s research axis Frontières du littéraire is online on the “carnet Hypothèses” of the axis.

According to her fictional texts, the American author Willa Cather had an unbounded hatred of the phonograph. However, her biographers claim that she enjoyed listening to records. Our investigation is therefore intended to clarify this apparent contradiction. What if the fate reserved for sound recording in her works was, in fact, in the service of a broader discourse on music and theatre?
