Queer Zoologies

Abstract

This joint talk, “Queer Zoologies,” will draw on Hannah Boast and Nicole Seymour’s recent collaborative work as co-authors and co-contributors. They will begin with an overview of what they summarize as “queer zoologies”- work at the intersection of queer theory and animal studies that pays attention to the ways that human sexualities become entangled with animal sexualities, as well as the limitations of extrapolating from one group to the other. They then offer two case studies. The first will be drawn from our co-authored chapter for the new anthology Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness: A Docalogue (ed. Jaimie Baron and Kristen Fuhs). The second will focus on ‘gay frogs’ and the meme-ification of cartoon animals by U.S. white supremacists, drawing on our work for a forthcoming special issue of Environmental Humanities journal on “Sex and Nature” (ed. Sarah Bezan and Ina Linge). They will conclude with some general reflections on the afterlives of these new media sensations as well as critical reflection on the racial politics of queer zoologies. 

Bio

Hannah Boast works on environmental politics and culture. Her first book is Hydrofictions: Water, Power and Politics in Israeli and Palestinian Literature (Edinburgh University Press, 2020). She is Assistant Professor and Ad Astra Fellow at University College Dublin. 

Nicole Seymour is the author of Bad Environmentalism: Irony and Irreverence in the Ecological Age (University of Minnesota Press, 2018). In May 2022, Bloomsbury’s Object Lessons book series will publish her cultural history of glitter. She is Associate Professor of English at California State University, Fullerton.
