The aim of this talk is to present Women on the Move, an EU-funded international network that brings together historians, economists, sociologists and specialists of migration and gender studies from over 50 different countries.

This transdisciplinary network’s goal is to unveil the presence and the economic contribution of migrant women in the history of Europe. It has set itself the task of creating a repository of European primary sources on female migration; it will also produce a documentary and organize exhibitions (outdoor and indoor) in order to raise public awareness on the presence of women in the history of European migration. The overall objective is to challenge macro-narratives that portray women as vulnerable individuals in migratory processes, by highlighting their economic, social and cultural resources. In keeping with the European Union’s Gender Equality Strategy (2018-2023), Women on the Move (2020-2024) will thus deconstruct the sexist stereotypes that have marked the history of Europe with a multidimensional and multifactorial interpretation of migration history to the present.
