Research themes

  • American-Cuban relations, 1776-1860
  • Slavery and abolitionism in the United States, Great Britain and Cuba, early 1800-1860
  • American and Cuban slave narratives
  • American photography of Cuba, 1850-1865

Current Project

I am currently doing research on American photographer Charles DeForest Fredricks who visited Cuba in the 1850s and took what is considered to be among the first pictures of the island. I am first interested in the reasons that led him to visit the island but also to establish a studio there. I am also interested in the way he represented slavery in Cuba within the larger context of American-Cuban relations of that time.
