Laëtitia Atlani-Duault (Université de Paris-IRD / Columbia University) and Luis Velasco-Pufleau (University of Bern / McGill University) will talk about their new book: Lieux de mémoire sonore. Des sons pour survivre, des sons pour tuer, Éditions de la Maison des Sciences de l’homme, 2021. The session will be held online via Zoom (link at ).

The session will be hosted by Occitane Lacurie (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, École des Arts/Institut ACTE). 

Laëtitia Atlani-Duault is an anthropologist working on experiences, traces and memories of santary and humanitarian crises. She is research director of the CEPED (Centre Population et Développement, Université de Paris/IRD), fellow teacher at Columbia University and president of the Covid19 Ad Memoriam Institute (Université de Paris), which aims at collecting, archiving and analyzing traces and memories of the pandemic. Member of the Conseil scientifique COVID19 and of the idependent comission on sexual violence in the French Catholic Church, Laëtitia Atlani-Duault is also the director of the newly founded World Health Organization Collaborative Center for Research on Health and Humanitarian Policies and Practice. She was awarded a bronze medal by the CNRS for her research on political anthropology.

Luis Velasco-Pufleau is a musicologist, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow at the University Bern and McGill University. His research focuses on the links between music, politics and violence in our societies. He particularly explores the political dimension of human voices, musical practices and sound memories. He co-edits the Transposition. Musique et sciences sociales journal and is the publication director of the research blog Music, Sound andConflict. He is also a member of the Swiss Young Academy.

LISTEN Seminar

An inter-university seminar, LISTEN brings together researchers in the humanities who study objects or practices involving sound or consider phenomena from an audile perspective: podcasts, audio books, radioliterature, performed poetry, slam, spoken word, sound arts, opera, audiovisual archives of literature, representation of sound and hearing in literature, soundscapes, paleophony… One of its aims is to devise methodological approaches for these objects which are made possible by the technologies of sound recording and reproduction and/or existing at the borders of literature, the performing arts, media studies and history of techniques and mentalities. Held in French or English, the seminar sessions are devoted to collective listening, sharing of methodologies and tools, scientific watch and reflecting on theoretical issues raised by sound objects and phenomena.
